U2: The Joshua Tree Tour 2019 Philippine Leg

It took U2 four decades to hold their first-ever show in the Philippines. The Philippine leg of The Joshua Tree Tour 2019’s Oceania and Asia was also their 2,050th show. It was definitely a long wait for us Filipino fans and we would have never imagined seeing one of the biggest bands of our generation.

The concert was held at the world’s largest indoor arena, the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.  The set has two (2) stages – the Main stage and B-stage. The B-stage was shaped like a Joshua Tree that represented the shadow of the tree on the screen. The video screen measured 45 feet high by 200 feet wide and a resolution of 1,560 by 7,200 pixels, the largest and highest resolution video screen of any concert tour.

The show was divided into three (3) Acts–Early Hits, The Joshua Tree and Encore.

U2’s first act began on the B-stage by playing some of their earliest hits, starting with “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, a song noted for its military-like drumbeats, rough guitar riffs and lyrics describing the incident in Northern Ireland where British Troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters and ends with Pride (In The Name of Love) from their Unforgettable Fire album. No video was flashed during this segment, as the group wanted the fans to focus on their music.

The second was at the Main Stage, The Joshua Tree segment where the band performed all the songs from that album, accompanied by eye dropping visuals on the screen. A short video by Dutch Photographer / Music Director, Anton Corbijn. accompanied many of the songs.

The encore was intended as an ode to women where Ultraviolet (Light My Way) was performed and the video screen displayed images of historical female figures and achievers. The show ends with one of their popular hits “One” from their “Achtung Baby” album, benefit single, with proceeds going towards AIDS research. It is a song about love, in many different ways and contexts.

One love, one blood

One life, you got to do what you should

One life with each other

Sisters, brothers
One life, but we’re not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other
One
One
